Rules for Ukrainian-plated cars in the EU in 2026 — what diaspora drivers should verify
High-level overview of temporary stay, insurance, and registration concepts — always confirm locally.

Important note
Rules differ by host country, length of stay, and whether the car is personal property or used commercially. This guide summarizes common questions Ukrainians in the EU ask in 2026 — verify with local transport offices before relying on it.
Temporary use vs re-registration
Most EU countries allow a foreign-registered vehicle for a limited period if it remains legally registered abroad and meets insurance requirements. Exceeding that period, or establishing residence, often triggers re-registration or export obligations.
Insurance
Keep valid MTPL (green card) or local equivalent. Border/country-specific insurers may require updated address or temporary policies.
Technical condition
Some countries require periodic technical inspections for foreign plates after a threshold (see our Poland guide). Fines apply for expired inspections where mandatory.
Customs & VAT
If the car entered the EU under temporary protection or personal import rules, changing owner or country may have customs/VAT consequences. Get written confirmation for your case.
Before you sell
Buyers will ask: How long can they drive on UA plates? Is inspection valid? Gather documents (registration, insurance, purchase contract) in one folder.
Can I drive indefinitely on Ukrainian plates in the EU?
Usually not. Most countries set time limits or tie allowances to residence status. Check the transport ministry rules of the country where you live.
